As he recovers from a recent injury, Zlatan Ibrahimovic wanted to leave something clear about his future as a footballer and at AC Milan.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic might be pushing 40 but he is still willing to keep going for as long as he can continue playing at the highest level. When he fell injured at Manchester United, the world started thinking about Zlatan in past tense.
Nobody believed he would be able to overcome the knee ligament injury that made him skip a full season. However, the Swedish striker thrives through chaos and criticism. Every single time he heard he was finished, Zlatan took that energy and transformed it into motivation.
He wasn’t going to risk another injury by going back directly to the highest level, which is why he joined the MLS. After successfully testing that experiment in the LA Galaxy, it was finally time to make his triumphant return to Europe. Needless to say, we all know how that’s going.
Zlatan wants to keep going.
Cut to today, Zlatan has AC Milan at the top of the Serie A table. He is playing some of his best football and making his teammates learn from him. “I’ll keep going until I can’t do these things I’m doing,” he told BBC Sport. “I just have to keep physically good and the rest will be solved by itself. We are in unbelievable form – we are doing great, we’re doing good,” the Swede said.
“But still we haven’t won anything, we have to keep that in mind. The first time I came to Milan I came to a club fighting for the title, the second time I came it was in a situation to bring the club and the team back to the top where it belongs. It’s a different challenge, it’s a challenge I like, because when they say it’s too difficult, it’s almost impossible, that’s where I come in the picture and that’s where I feel alive.
“If I can succeed and if I’m able to do what I think I can do, the feedback is amazing, the feeling is amazing because it’s a bigger achievement than coming to a top team that is already top. I’m very motivated.”
