Ace Football previews the Champions League match between Marseille and Manchester City, and offers the latest betting tips, line-ups, odds, and team news.
The second Group C fixture on Tuesday night in the Champions League will see Manchester City cross the channel to face Marseille at the Orange Velodrome in France.
Two wins out of two will very much be on the agenda for the visitors in southern France. They won their opening game convincingly over Porto and now hope to establish control in the early phase of their group campaign.
Although City head into somewhat unknown territory, having never faced Marseille beforehand. And with their French hosts enjoying a better start domestically, they may need to tread carefully in this one.
Marseille Form & Stats
Marseille’s first Champions League game since 2013/14 ended in a 1-0 defeat to Olympiacos last week. It left them outside the top-two spots and, therefore, under pressure to open their points account on Tuesday.
The result in Greece was a somewhat cruel one, but showed the ruthless nature of Europe’s elite club competition. Just when Marseille thought they had salvaged a deserved point, Ahmed Mahgoub nicked a late winner for Olympiacos.
Andre Villas-Boas’ side, however, recovered from that setback by beating Lorient 1-0 over the weekend. The victory moved them up to fourth in the Ligue 1 standings and, crucially, within touching distance of leaders Paris Saint-Germain. Moreover, they’ve lost just once in their eight league games.
Key Team Stats
- Lost just one of their eight league games (W4 D3).
- Drawn three of their last six games in all competitions.
- Haven’t won at home in the Champions League since February 2012.
- Under 2.5 goals in their last four home games in all competitions.
Manchester City Form & Stats
Pep Guardiola’s side still have that burning desire to end their long wait for Champions League glory and proved it by overcoming Porto 3-1 in their Group C opener last week. But their lack of consistency is a concern.
City once again dropped valuable points in the Premier League last weekend by drawing 1-1 at West Ham. It’s left them down in 13th-place on eight points from five games. To be fair, though, they’ve had quite a few injury problems in a congested fixture list.
The loss of Sergio Aguero to a suspected hamstring injury, in particular, was an unwelcome setback. Although Kevin De Bruyne is back, while Phil Foden and Ferran Torres have shown promise in the club’s recent matches.
Key Team Stats
- Unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions (W3 D2).
- Won three of their last five away games in all competitions (D2).
- Over 2.5 goals in their last five away games in all competitions.
- BTTS in six of their eight games in all competitions this season.
