A London derby awaits between Tottenham and Chelsea as the Last-16 stage of the Carabao Cup kicks off on Tuesday evening.

Despite boasting home advantage at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Jose Mourinho’s side are in trouble. Their schedule this season has been nothing but hectic from the word go. In fact, this will be their sixth match in 17 days amid Premier League and Europa League commitments.

Chelsea, on the other hand, head into the derby with a point to prove after another dreadful defensive display saw them concede three goals against West Brom last weekend.

It should be an interesting night in north London, with goals normally never amiss in these derbies. In fact, Spurs and Chelsea’s last goalless draw came in November 2015. A total of 12 games and 37 goals have since gone by.

Tottenham Form & Stats

A congested schedule may prove decisive for Spurs heading into Tuesday’s London derby. The Carabao Cup represents their best chance of silverware, having not won anything since their last triumph in the competition back in 2008. But matters beyond their control suggests their long wait will continue.

Jose Mourinho summed it up in his pre-match press conference on Monday by explaining how the greater financial value from competitions like the Europa League may force him to give Thursday’s qualifier against Maccabi Haifa priority.

Therefore, the Spurs boss will probably rotate his line-up from last Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle. That, on top of their woeful home record this season, could mean trouble for the hosts. Especially as all three of their victories have been on the road.

Key Team Stats
  • Have been eliminated from the Carabao Cup by a London club five times in the last seven seasons.
  • Winless in the last two home games (D1 L1).
  • Over 2.5 goals in the last five games in all competitions.
  • Haven’t kept a clean sheet in the last five games in all competitions.

Chelsea Form & Stats

Chelsea have the manpower and the desire to make things very difficult for former coach Mourinho. A summer laden with expensive signings has brought some deadly attackers, namely Timo Werner and Kai Havertz.

Their defensive woes, however, continue to persist in an almost unfriendly manner. Any momentum gained from their 6-0 win over Barnsley in the previous round was quickly erased as West Brom scored three goals inside 27 minutes during Saturday’s Premier League clash. While they responded in kind to claim a draw; such frailties leave them vulnerable for a single leg knockout fixture.

Recent history favors Frank Lampard’s side for this clash though, with the visitors winning all their last four meetings with Spurs. If they can contain their leaks in defense, passage into the fifth round is possible.

Key Team Stats
  • One clean sheet in the last 15 away games in all competitions.
  • Have won the last four games against Spurs in all competitions. Eight goals were scored and just two conceded.
  • Over 3.5 goals in the last five games in all competitions (one friendly included).
  • Reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals twice in the last three seasons.
  • Lampard has beaten Mourinho in all three of their encounters. (2 for Chelsea and 1 with Derby).
