Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger weighed in on Arsenal’s hopes for the season and what he would say to Mikel Arteta.

Wenger was the man who brought Arteta to Arsenal in a deadline day €12m transfer from Everton in the summer of 2011.

The former midfielder made 150 appearances under the legendary Gunners coach before retiring in 2016, winning two FA Cup and Community Shield titles. Fast forward to this day, however, he is now the man in charge.

Arteta has picked up the pieces from Unai Emery’s failed spell as Wenger’s successor, winning the FA Cup and Community Shield in his first year as manager.

Such is Arteta’s impact at the Emirates that Wenger is refusing to rule out even a surprise Premier League title.

The only word of advice he has for his former captain is to stay true to his ideals as a coach to the very end.

“To continue to have a grip on the team, as he has at the moment,” Wenger said in Q&A for The Guardian. “And to go to the end of his beliefs,”

“I think there is a good team spirit and they have a good chance to do well. I believe it will not be very difficult to improve on the number of points they got last season, but I’m convinced Arsenal can be in the top four, if not more. Why not more?

“They can be the surprise package for me this year: they bought well, they strengthened the defense well, and they kept the players who were already there.

“In my last year I bought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, they kept him. They have every ingredient and no real weakness.”
