FIFA paid their respects to the late Diego Maradona at The Best awards ceremony with a video tribute.

Diego Armando Maradona tragically lost his life at age 60 after suffering a cardiac arrest a few weeks ago. The news of his passing shocked the world of football and many tributes have been made ever since. As per usual, FIFA remembered the great legends we have lost throughout the year. Maradona’s video tribute was one of the most heartwarming moments of the virtual ceremony held tonight in Zurich.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino kicked-off the award’s show by mentioning both Maradona and Paolo Rossi, former Italian World Champion who recently lost his battle with lung cancer.

“A very emotional thought is going to Diego Armando Maradona and Paolo Rossi. Two legends who have lost their lives and have brought a lot of sadness to all of us in the last few weeks. A big hug goes virtually to their families, their friends, to all those like us who loved them and fell in love with the beautiful game.”

Maradona and Rossi both passed away less than a month away. Therefore, the Argentinian’s former teammates Sergio Goycochea e Ciro Ferrara were present to honor the fallen legends.

“It’s hard, to sum up in a few words what Diego means to the people of Argentina. He was the best ambassador and that meant joy and hope for the people,” said fellow countryman Goycochea.

“I was 15 years old and enjoyed the great result we (Italy) obtained in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. It made us very happy and we’re grateful to the team and Paolo Rossi. I will always remember him with a smile,” added Ferrara.
