Lionel Messi paid yet another tribute to the late Diego Maradona after dedicating his goal against Osasuna to the football legend.
Lionel Messi paid an emotional tribute to Diego Maradona by showing off a Newell’s Old Boys shirt after scoring for Barcelona against Osasuna.
The 33-year-old looked close to tears during the minute’s applause for Maradona prior to the kick-off before the match.
Barca were back to winning ways in the league following their 4-0 win over Osasuna and Messi got on the score sheet after 73 minutes.
He was found on the edge of the box by Francisco Trincao and made space for himself before firing home.
After grabbing his goal, Messi took off his Barcelona shirt to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys jersey, with the no.10 on the back in tribute to Maradona.
La Pulga pointed to the sky while displaying the Newell’s kit, in a show of emotion for his fellow Argentinian. The tribute can be seen below in a video posted by Goal.
As per the rules, Messi was subsequently shown a yellow card for taking off his Barca shirt.
The Barca captain spent a spell in his youth at Newell’s, a club Maradona represented for one year towards the end of his career.
