Donny van de Beek has hailed Edwin van der Sar’s role in his big-money move from Ajax to Manchester United.
A long-standing transfer saga surrounding Van de Beek’s future got the conclusion yesterday, as the Dutchman sealed a long-term contract at Old Trafford.
Manchester United shelled out £35million and obliged to pay another £4m in add-ons to beat the competition from Barcelona and several other Europe’s powerhouses.
The 23-year-old midfielder agreed to join Real Madrid only last summer. But Zinedine Zidane eventually pulled the plug on the deal.
The Frenchman’s desire to team up with Paul Pogba turns out to have handed United the chance to put their hands on the Ajax jewel.
Van de Beek has refused to hide his delight for becoming a part of the Theatre of Dreams community.
He has also named the Ajax chief executive officer Van der Sar as one of the key factors in his decision to join Manchester United.
“I talked with him [Van der Sar], and he told me a lot of stories about the club and about everything. He told how big the club is and how nice an experience he had with it,” Van de Beek told United’s official website.
“Yes, it’s a really big history. I watched a lot of their matches before, and I also had a really good meeting with the coach [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer], and that for me was a really important thing.
“We talked about football things, about the club, and I always make decisions about my feelings, and my feelings were directly good with everything. That was, for me, an important thing.”
