Atletico de Madrid secured a solid win against Elche with a goal from Diego Costa, who replaced an injured Joao Felix at the 73rd-minute mark.
The Colchoneros remain at the top spot of the Spanish league after this afternoon’s victory. However, it’s not all happiness and rainbows at the Madrid team as their Portuguese star asked to be subbed off. The player took a hit in the first half and left the pitch in visible pain.
Atletico de Madrid released a statement clarifying what happened with the former Golden Boy. However, the club didn’t mention when he would be able to return.
“The Portuguese striker could not finish the match played on Saturday against Elche at the Wanda Metropolitano and had to be replaced due to some discomfort caused by a costal trauma received in the first half.”
Additionally, Diego Simone spoke about the occurrence at his post-match press conference and wished for Felix’s quick recovery.
“It was a tough blow, they wanted to kill the counter-attack by blocking Joao. He played well for the team but he had a lot of discomfort and pain. I hope it’s just a small hit.”
Joao Felix has been vital for Atleti’s title hopes this season, scoring eight goals and two assists in 18 matches. Moreover, the Portuguese forward has attracted the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Juventus.
