The north Londoners crashed out of the FA Cup on Wednesday to Championship side Sheffield United.

Tottenham fans ‘deserve much more’ than the performance they saw on Wednesday, says assistant manager Cristian Stellini.

A 79th-minute strike from Sheffield United midfielder Iliman Ndiaye sent Tottenham out of the FA Cup in a 1-0 fifth-round defeat to the Championship club at Bramall Lane.

“If you don’t win a game like this, it’s because something was not perfect,” Stellini, who is in charge of the first-team whilst manager Antonio Conte recovers from surgery, told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Today, our energy was not enough to put the opponent in great difficulty.

“We had opportunities to score, but now we must analyze the goal we conceded. At the moment, if you concede a goal, you need time to recover.

“There was more energy from the changes [we made], but we have to improve a lot. I can only apologize to the fans for our performance. They deserve much more than this.”

The defeat was Tottenham’s third in five games, ending a run of two straight 2-0 wins. The Champions League is the only cup competition they’re still in now.

Spurs will next visit Wolves on Saturday for a Premier League match.
