Brentford vs Tottenham

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-1

“I’d love to say this will be a thriller to bring back Premier League football with a bang, but my gut feeling is it might actually be a slightly underwhelming draw.”

Mark Lawrenson: 1-1

“All eyes will be on Harry Kane, won’t they? Brentford only had a handful of players away at the World Cup so they’ll be well-prepared. I’m going to for a 1-1 Draw in this, the early kick-offs are always a bit drab. Brentford had a great result against Manchester City last time but that’s old news now. It’s almost like starting a new season.”

Patrice Evra: 2-1

“I don’t know if mentally players will be ready. Psychologically. Imagine the reception for Harry Kane every time he gets a penalty, he will have to be strong. It’s going to be tough to come straight back. I’m going to go for Brentford, I think they will be fresher, will have had more time with more players back in training together.”

Crystal Palace vs Fulham

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 2-1

“I am going to back the Eagles this time. They are always decent at home and I think they will edge this.”

Mark Lawrenson: 2-0

“Crystal Palace are going okay and they’re comfortably midtable. Fulham will be looking to get stronger in January and they’ve done great. But Palace are at home and there’s always a good atmosphere so I’ll go 2-0 to Palace.”

Patrice Evra: 2-0

“I think the break may benefit the players that didn’t go to the World Cup, they had time to train, psychologically they won’t be drained like those that went to the World Cup, they will be fresh and they will want to show themselves now that the eyes are back on the Premier League. Players like Zaha, we didn’t see him get to express his quality in the World Cup, but I think Palace will win this one.”

Everton vs Wolves

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-0

“Everton have to win, and I think they will win. I was at Goodison Park last season when their fans made a huge difference for them in games like this, and they will help them again here.”

Mark Lawrenson: 2-1

“This will be Julen Lopetegui’s first game as Wolves manager even though he’s been there six weeks. Wolves are another side that won’t have had too many players away and they will have had a bit of a pre-season even though we’re in December. But with a big crowd at Goodison, I’ll go 2-1 to Everton.”

Patrice Evra: 1-0

“Lampard is under pressure, if they don’t win I think he could get sacked. If you’re an owner, you will be influenced by wanting to start fresh in the new year, that could be a mistake. Frank will have had time to reflect and prepare his team and I will go for them in this one.”

Leicester City vs Newcastle

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-2

“The Foxes won this fixture 4-0 in December last year, but Newcastle are a completely different team now. It will be close, but I’m backing them to find a way of winning this one too.”

Mark Lawrenson: 1-0

“These two won in the Carabao coming into this so they’ll be in high spirits. I’m going to go 1-0 to Leicester here. They’re at home and have been improving a lot. The last thing Newcastle wanted was a break in the season for the World Cup.”

Patrice Evra: 1-2

“Newcastle are ready. I don’t think the break will have affected them much, I could be wrong but I can see them winning this one.”

Southampton vs Brighton

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 2-2

“The Saints have got a pretty kind run of games coming up, with Fulham and Nottingham Forest next after Brighton, and they really need a ‘new manager bounce’ to pick up some wins from those fixtures. I am not sure they will get one of them here, though. Brighton play with a bit of freedom under Roberto De Zerbi, and they always look like scoring goals.”

Mark Lawrenson: 1-1

“I think this might be 1-1. Southampton have got a new manager and that means everybody will try a bit harder. Nathan Jones did brilliantly at Luton and he’s shown that he can work with and improve players on a small budget.”

Patrice Evra: 0-2

“I doubt Alexis Mac Allister will be available for Brighton, but that won’t matter because for Brighton the star is the team, not just one player. I can see them winning this one.”

Aston Villa vs Liverpool

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-0

“I can see there being at least one surprise result in this first round of games back after the World Cup and I think Villa boss Unai Emery will fancy his chances of sneaking this one.”

Mark Lawrenson: 0-2

“Liverpool have been in Dubai and they will have had a good build-up. All the World Cup boys will be fit and ready to go whereas I don’t know if Emi Martinez will play for Villa. I’m going to go 2-0 to Liverpool.”

Patrice Evra: 1-3

“I saw Liverpool in the Emirates Cup and you can feel that they are angry. Their hunger is back. They will want to come back strong for the second part of the season and I can see them starting with a win in this one.”

Arsenal vs West Ham

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-1

“I feel like I have backed West Ham to be better than they have been on plenty of occasions already this season, but the one thing they should be here is tough to beat.”

Mark Lawrenson: 1-2

“Gabriel Jesus is out for a while and that will be a big loss for Arsenal. I’m going to go for an upset here and go 2-1 to West Ham. All that momentum that Arsenal built up before the World Cup counts for nothing now because of the layoff. I just think that David Moyes would have taken the break as a pre-season and he will have worked them really hard so I’ll go with the upset.”

Patrice Evra: 2-2

“Arsenal have the opportunity to go eight points clear before City play, and the players have to be professional and understand the goal and not enjoy the Christmas period. Jesus is out and I think they are going to miss him. I can see this one being a draw.”

Chelsea vs Bournemouth

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 2-0

“Chelsea have had issues scoring goals since Graham Potter took charge and they will need to finish their chances against Bournemouth, as well as create them. I do expect Chelsea to win, but it is going to be interesting to find out what happens with the Cherries next too.”

Mark Lawrenson: 2-0

“Gary O’Neil’s been made permanent Bournemouth manager now but I think this will be a straightforward 2-0 win for Chelsea. I know they’re a bit light with injuries but they’ll have too much for Bournemouth.”

Patrice Evra: 2-0

“I think now Chelsea have no excuses, for the players that didn’t go to the World Cup they’ve had one month, Potter will have had the chance to get to know his team better. They will understand the system and they will be ready to go again. There are no excuses for a team like Chelsea, it’s time for them to wake up and start the season.”

Manchester United vs Nottingham Forest

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 1-0

“Now old sulky pants – aka Cristiano Ronaldo – has gone, the expectation is that Manchester United will be in a better place and be much better as a team. That may well be the case, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they make hard work of winning this game and need a bit of magic from Marcus Rashford to get over the line.”

Mark Lawrenson: 2-0

“I’ll go for another 2-0 home win here as well. For some teams, the World Cup has been a hindrance. For others, it’s been a help and I would put Manchester United in the second category. Erik ten Hag will have refined them and there’s no Cristiano Ronaldo skulking about the place. I don’t think they’ve suffered any big injuries at the World Cup so 2-0 to United.”

Patrice Evra: 2-1

“There’s no negativity anymore and let’s not create a new one. United are good at creating a new negativity about a player, Maguire if he has a bad performance for example. So, let’s stay positive. I’m going to stay positive and say that United will win.”

Leeds United vs Manchester City

Pundits predictions

Chris Sutton: 0-4

“I like the way Leeds play, and they always seem to have a spell in every game where they are on top, but they rarely do it for 90 minutes and that worries me when they are up against a side as good as City.”

Mark Lawrenson: 0-2

“Erling Haaland will be champing at the bit and Kevin De Bruyne wasn’t at the World Cup for very long so Manchester City are in good shape. I’ll go 2-0 to City in this one, a straightforward win. Leeds will give a load of effort and application but no, no surprises here.”

Patrice Evra: 0-3

“I think Erling Haaland, if he doesn’t play in this one he will be mad. He is ready to eat the net. He’s back. There’s no chance for any team anymore, Haaland is back. Alvarez isn’t even in the starting 11 for City, and he’s celebrating winning the World Cup, it’s not fair. City will come back with more determination, hunger and Haaland will be saying ‘OK guys, I didn’t play in the World Cup, but now you’re going to see me.’ The eyes will be back on Haaland again.”
