After Romelu Lukaku’s return in a record transfer deal, Glen Johnson has advised Timo Werner on how he can salvage his Chelsea career.

Glen Johnson believes playing on the wing is the ‘only option’ left for Timo Werner to continue his career at Chelsea.

Six goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season from Werner helped prompt Chelsea to re-sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan this summer for a club-record €115 million deal.

The Belgian is likely to become Chelsea’s main man in central attack, meaning Werner may have to change position for regular game time.

“It’s clear that Timo Werner hasn’t performed to the standard we all know he’s capable of, but he wasn’t brought in to play as an out-and-out striker. Romelu Lukaku hasn’t come in to replace Werner within the squad,” Johnson told BonusCodeBets.

“Chelsea are most effective playing dynamic football with a big, less mobile striker and two whippets playing off the forward. Werner can still play a big part, but his performances must improve.”

The former Blues full-back added: “Timo has a future at Chelsea, but playing on the wing is his only option, and even then, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic all start ahead of him based on what we’ve seen so far.

“Although things change very quickly in football, it only takes an injury for Timo to get another chance, and if he hits the ground running, he can re-establish himself in the side.”
