FIFA has released their shortlist of nominees for their annual Best Men’s Coach award with a surprise among the three contenders.
After announcing the five front-runners to win the prize two weeks ago, FIFA has now narrowed down the race to three finalists.
Bayern Munich’s manager Hans-Dieter Flick is the betting sites’ favorite to take the award home. His nomination is hardly a surprise. Flick’s first season as the Bavarians head-coach ended with a well-deserved Champions League title. Moreover, Flick also led Bayern Munich in two victorious cup runs, as well as their 30th Bundesliga title.
The second nominee is none other than last year’s winner, Jurgen Klopp. After winning the Champions League title in 2019, the German also secured Liverpool’s first title in 30 years. However, the Reds’ European run didn’t go as smoothly this year. They were thrown out of the competition by Atletico de Madrid in the Round of 16.
Finally, the third nominee is the most controversial one of them all. Marcelo Bielsa was granted a spot among the best managers in the world after he won the English Championship with Leeds United. The Peacocks spent 13 years away from England’s top flight. Nonetheless, on Bielsa’s second season with the club, the Argentinian manager awoke the sleeping giants who returned to the Premier League after securing 93 points in the second division.
Zinedine Zidane and Julen Lopetegui were left out of the top three for the award. The winner will be announced in less than a week, on Thursday December 17th.
