It has been reported that Atletico Madrid is already targeting one of Chelsea’s strikers as Diego Costa’s potential replacement for January.

Diego Costa’s sudden exit from Atletico Madrid has left clubs like Chelsea quite nervous for some of their strikers. The Colchoneros already started looking for a proper replacement who can bring that reliability on the attack. Diego Simeone has a fantastic track record with signings of players who are veterans but can still offer results. In this case, the Argentine manager already has his sights set on a couple of players who can replace Costa.

One of them is a Chelsea reject who has been playing fantastic football as he keeps growing older. We are obviously talking about Olivier Giroud, one of the most underrated strikers in the world at the moment. The French player has been mistreated by Chelsea over the last year and he already hinted at a possible exit. It appears his opportunity just presented itself after Atletico’s announcement of Diego Costa’s departure.

Olivier Giroud’s golden opportunity.

Even though Atletico Madrid currently has Luis Suarez as the main striker, they could easily use a player like Giroud right now. According to Metro, the French striker is at the top of Atletico Madrid’s list alongside Arkadiusz Milik. However, the Napoli striker won’t leave his current club that easily due to Aurelio De Laurentiis’s refusal to agree on his transfer. Diego Simeone’s first choice is the Polish striker but Giroud is also at the top of the list.

This is the exact opportunity to leave that the Frenchman was waiting for. Playing for Atletico Madrid is a luxury that very few players can have throughout their career. We can easily see how Giroud can become an important piece for ‘Cholo’ Simeone in his aspirations for this season’s trophies. Despite Frank Lampard’s recent change of heart with Giroud, the player still feels rejected by the club and he wouldn’t mind leaving.
