Lionel Messi surprisingly had to settle for second-best as another Argentine player finished as the nation’s top goalscorer for 2020.
Ramiro Rocca has beaten Lionel Messi as the highest-scoring Argentine footballer in 2020 at club level by a single goal.
The 32-year-old striker transferred to CSD Municipal in Guatemala last January and quickly made his mark, scoring 27 goals across all competitions.
The Argentine who scored the most goals in world football in 2020 was not Lionel Messi, according to @FIFAcom.

Rocca had a low-key start last season by scoring five times in his first 12 outings in the Liga Nacional Clausura. However, he has sprung to life in 2020/21 by smashing home 21 goals in only 15 league games.
Add the goal he scored in Municipal’s 4-1 defeat to Saprissa CONCACAF League in June, Rocca’s total tally rises to 27 goals as per Transfermarkt.
Messi’s absence from Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Eibar on Tuesday, meanwhile, means he had to settle for second-best with 26 club goals – although he did bag 23 assists compared to Rocca’s 0!
Of course, the Liga Nacional Clausura and Spanish La Liga are on a completely different scale in terms of quality.
But for Rocca, it’s a priceless achievement he won’t forget anytime soon.
