With Leo Messi sitting in the stands, FC Barcelona received Eibar in the last official match of 2020. It’s been a tough year for the Catalan club, perhaps the toughest one in the last decade. Despite playing against a relatively accessible opponent, the year ended as complicated as it began. As Messi recovers from an ankle issue, Ronald Koeman had the complicated task to find the ideal starting XI for this match.
But the initial tactical approach with three center-halves didn’t go as planned for the Dutch manager. The first half started with an early missed penalty from Martin Braithwaite and a disallowed goal scored by the same player. Koeman was fuming during the first half and he decided to take three players in the second half. Miralem Pjanic, Sergiño Dest, and Antoine Griezmann were dismal during the time they played.

The second half started and Barcelona did improve with Koeman’s modifications. But Araujo’s mistake gifter Kike with an early goal for Eibar made everything more complicated for the Blaugrana. Ousmane Dembele’s inclusion was the decisive factor for Barcelona’s equalizer as he scored a beautiful goal through a collective effort.
The Catalan club wasn’t able to finish the match with an advantage despite their many efforts. On the downside, Phil Coutinho picked up a serious injury that seems to have damaged his right knee. It was a mediocre performance from the locals who play considerably worse without Lionel Messi on the pitch.
