After tonight’s draw against Eibar, it’s time to analyze FC Barcelona’s forgettable 2020 and the many highlights they had throughout the year.

FC Barcelona lived through one of the worst years in the club’s history during 2020, there’s no other way to look at it. We will make a recount of every important event that took place during a year that was difficult for everybody due to a global pandemic. However, Barcelona suffered one of the most disappointing years in regards to titles and results. Even though everything started off well with Leo Messi’s sixth Ballon d’Or, the Argentine was already thinking about leaving the institution because he knew all about the board’s dismal job.

Messi already confirmed he was trying to leave the club throughout the year but Bartomeu didn’t allow it. Having that energy during the season was detrimental to FC Barcelona’s results. As the captain of the club, wanting to leave in the middle of all competitions was a clear handicap that affected directly to the team’s results. We can clearly see it with the 8-2 result against Bayern Munich.

No titles throughout 2020.

Certainly, losing as they did in the Champions League was a painful way to go but that result was expected on some level. They were facing one of the most dominant football clubs of the last 20 years. However, losing La Liga was perhaps more disappointing due to the way in which they lost. Real Madrid wasn’t the most dominant side we can remember in years and Barcelona still bottled it. Between Leo Messi’s desire to leave and the club’s disastrous management from Quique Setien, the stars aligned for a dismal season.

Then the summer came along with Messi’s decisive burofax. If the club was already in crisis, this is the final stroke that confirmed it. After the whole circus generated by the biggest news of the year, it was clear that 2020 was the worst in the club’s last 20 years. Fortunately, we are only days from this year to be over and Barcelona can start from scratch all over again. We’ll see how they do in 2021.
