Despite what recent reports might have claimed, Jose Mourinho has been urged to keep hold of Gareth Bale at Tottenham.

It’s safe to say Gareth Bale has not made the dream return everyone hoped to see at Tottenham.

The Welshman made a big move back to north London on loan from Real Madrid last summer. However, he has failed to hit expected heights and has been limited to only 12 appearances under Jose Mourinho.

Recurring injuries and fitness issues have seen Bale struggle for consistent game-time at large.

In fact, the 31-year-old has only started eight times for Jose Mourinho this term and a good number of those starts have come in the Europa League.

All of these have led to recent claims that Tottenham could be left with no choice but to send Bale back to parent club Real Madrid come the end of the season.

However, talkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose thinks that would be the wrong move and has urged Mourinho to perhaps consider more game-time for the Welshman.

“If he’s staying at Tottenham – and I still would keep Gareth Bale – then you have to play him.” Ambrose told talkSPORT.

“There are question marks over his fitness of course, but we are never going to know how fit he is until he plays.”

“He got some minutes on Sunday which is good, but if you are Jose Mourinho you are paying him a lot of money – I believe £220,000 of the £600,000-a-week he’s on.”

Ambrose still believes there is time for Bale to make an impact under Mourinho before the end of the season.

He continued: “Do you really want to send him back to Real Madrid and put him in that scenario?”

“For me, you’ve got to give him minutes. If he stays you’ve got to give him some game time and show that he’s still got it.”

“He’s still got until the summer and when he first arrived you could see the impact he made on the team.”

“Even today he hit a tame free-kick and it was, ‘oh, unbelievable’; I think [talkSPORT commentator] Sam Matterface said the goalie will have a poster of that on his wall – that’s the impact the guy has.”
