The English midfielder is increasingly losing favor with his manager as he struggles to overcome the most testing period of his career.
Jose Mourinho publicly ‘digging out’ Dele Alli for his mistakes in Tottenham’s Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday is unjustified, according to Jamie O’Hara.
Alli was handed a rare start, only his fourth of the season, in the 3-1 win over Stoke City. After losing possession and almost causing his side to concede, he was taken off six minutes after the hour-mark.
The England international was visibly frustrated over his limited time on the pitch as he booted the water bottles by the touchline while making his way to the stands.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho admitted that he was angry at the player for ‘causing problems for his own team’.
A former Spurs star is unhappy with the Portuguese tactician’s treatment of Alli, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the club.
“I think Mourinho’s doing a great job but I don’t like the way he’s treating Dele Alli,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.
“What do you expect from the boy? You’re not playing him, he’s not been involved, he’s hardly getting on the bench never mind starting.
“What’s he gaining coming out in the press and digging out that single performance? It’s just killing his confidence more.
“He’s an investment for this club, he’s an asset to the club. Whether he’s in your plans or not you don’t want to kill his confidence much so that you totally lose him.”
