The former Premier League title and Golden Boot winners share the same verdict on the current title race.

Michael Owen and Alan Shearer agree that Arsenal are favorites to win the Premier League this season.

The Gunners lead reigning champions Manchester City by two points at the top of the standings. They also have a game in hand. Sitting a further three points back are the re-surging Manchester United in third.

Owen reckons Arsenal are in ‘the driving seat’

“It’s amazing isn’t it? You see Man City sat there on 52 points and it’s a really good total, but you just don’t feel like they’re absolutely purring and at the top of their game this season so far,” Owen said on Premier League Productions before United’s 3-0 win over Leicester on Sunday.

“Arsenal, even though they’ve had a couple of iffy results in recent times, they’re probably sat there confident now. They’ve gained another couple of points on Manchester City – and probably had the harder game.

“However, cast your minds back a month or so and Manchester City would probably snap your hand off only being two points behind now, because that gap was quite big. Everyone knows there are going to be so many ups and downs and twists – and nobody is mentioning Manchester United.

“Because if Manchester City are involved, and obviously Manchester United, if they win their game in hand, they’re only three points behind City, so you cannot rule anything out at the moment. But you’d have to say that Arsenal are in the driving seat.”

Shearer weighs in his verdict

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Shearer said: “I know Thomas Partey is out injury at the moment, but if Arsenal can get him back and then have a little bit of luck between now and the end of the season with keeping their key players fit, I think they will do it, I really do.”

Who do Arsenal, Man City & Man Utd face next?

Arsenal will head to the King Power Stadium next Saturday to take on Leicester City. The Gunners are coming off a superb 4-2 comeback win away to Aston Villa last weekend.

Manchester City, on the other hand, must play RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the Champions League first before visiting Bournemouth this coming Saturday. They drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

Likewise, Manchester United have a game in Europe coming first against Barcelona in the Europa League. They then play Newcastle this Sunday in the EFL Cup final.
