Lionel Messi shared his farewell to the late coach Alejandro Sabella on social media after Barcelona’s defeat.

Alejandro Sabella passed away yesterday in Buenos Aires at the age of 66. The Argentinian manager led Messi and his countrymen to the World Cup final in 2014, only falling short against Germany. The former Argentina boss was hospitalized in the wake of Maradona’s passing two weeks ago. Sabella, who had heart problems in the past, reportedly became very distressed after receiving the news.

Sabella began his spell managing Argentina back in 2011, after winning the CONMEBOL Libertadores with Estudiantes. The former player led La Albiceleste to its highest honors in the Messi-era, becoming Vice Champions of the World in 2014.

Therefore, Alejandro Sabella had a great impact on Messi’s career. The 66-year-old was the one who made Leo captain of his national team. Following Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat against Juventus, the sixth-time Ballon D’Or winner decided to break his silence and thank his manager for the memories.

“It was a pleasure to share so much with you. Alejandro was a great person, on top of being an impressive professional who marked my career and with whom I learned a lot from. We lived together some of my best football memories during the World Cup qualifiers and in the World Cup as well. My condolences to all his family and friends.”

Other members of the 2014’s Argentina squad also shared their condolences, such as Sergio Aguero and Javier Mascherano.

The Manchester City striker expressed his sadness and thanked the manager for his wisdom and trust. ” You were much more than a manager,” he said on Twitter. As for Barcelona’s former midfielder, Mascherano told Sabella to fly. “I thank life for making you cross my pathway.”
