Solskjaer’s side have already made a marquee signing, and they could further strengthen their squad in this summer market.

Manchester United could challenge for the Premier League title next season, suggests Tony Cascarino as he backs the Red Devils to “get closer to” Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool.

Man Utd secured a second-place Premier League finish in 2020-21, although they finished much behind bitter rivals Man City in terms of points collected.

However, last year’s Europa League finalists have bolstered their attack ahead of the new season by adding talented winger Jadon Sancho to their ranks while they are also reportedly working on reinforcing other areas of their team.

As a result, many expect Man Utd to give the likes of Liverpool, Man City, and Chelsea a run for their money in the race for the English top-flight crown in 2021-22, with a former Premier League forward being one of them.

Cascarino told talkSPORT: “If you think of where City have improved, and Liverpool’s was pretty dramatic under Klopp, Tuchel coming in at Chelsea has made them an exceptional side… when you are coming from a long way behind, and they (United) were, seeing an improvement is a big thing.

“I think United last year showed their intent to get far closer, have they got enough to get over the line? No I don’t think they have, but they can get very close to them.

“There’s been a definite improvement in their squad and the style of football they are playing.

“They’ve got a good back four now, I do think there is more to come from that midfield. They are an exciting team and have a very exciting forward line.

“[Edinson] Cavani is one hell of a player. We talk about Sancho going to the club and having other great players like [Mason] Greenwood, who can contribute, and [Bruno] Fernandes. I think keeping Cavani for another year is a big signing. He does so many good things as a footballer.

“That old and young dynamic in a team works really well.”
