The title race is mathematically still open, and United can reduce their deficit against City to just four points this week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes a tight schedule makes it “impossible” for Manchester United to maintain pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Manchester United still have the chance, albeit very faint, to usurp Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League.

Should they win all their remaining four matches and should their bitter rivals fail to win their last three games, the Red Devils would be crowned the champions of England for the first time since 2012/13.

Solskjaer insisted his side will delay the Sky Blues’ title party for as long as possible after the 3-1 win over Aston Villa but speaking ahead of the match against Leicester City, he has changed his stance.

“I wish I could have said let’s go full out in all the games but it’s impossible,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“That’s the hard bit for me – knowing that if I do play these XI again on Tuesday and Thursday it’s impossible. I run too much of a risk of injuring them, so talking about integrity in the league and stuff, don’t blame me when I have to make changes, because I have to.

“It’s not safe for them to play all four, so I’ve got to prioritise.”
