Kai Havertz’s move to Chelsea made sense for his career but that shouldn’t rule Real Madrid or Barcelona out in the future, says Holzhauser.
Chelsea finally got their man last week by signing Havertz in an €80m transfer, plus €20m in add-ons, for the next five seasons.
The 21-year-old became the Blues’ sixth addition of the summer transfer window after Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, and Thiago Silva.
Out of all the new signings, Havertz is one of the most hotly anticipated for the new season. He may never have played Premier League football before, but he’s expected to thrive. The hope is the German will add another dimension to the Blues attack for the upcoming campaign.
But while Chelsea can relish the prospect of having one of the most exciting young talents on their books now, Wolfgang Holzhauser believes there will be more Havertz transfer sagas in the future.
The former Bayer Leverkusen coach is certain Real Madrid and Barcelona, who were allegedly among the midfielder’s pursuers this summer, will come knocking on his door again.
“They cannot make big signings due to the corona crisis,” Holzhauser explained to Goal and SPOX.
“I also fully understand that Leverkusen chiefs Fernando Carro and Rudi Voller never backed away from their demands. 80 million euros is of course a lot of money, but compared to other transfers it is more than justified.
“And it does not mean that clubs like Real and Barca will not be of interest to Kai Havertz in the future. He is only 21 years old. For now, it was important for Havertz to take the next logical step in his development after three years as a regular in Leverkusen.”
