Despite the recent signing of Kai Havertz, ex-Chelsea star Craig Burley believes Frank Lampard still has a big issue to sort in defence.

Kai Havertz completed a long-awaited move from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea last week.

The Blues coughed out a reported €80m in a deal that could also rise by a further €20m in add-ons.

Havertz joins the Blues on a five-year contract and becomes their sixth summer addition.

Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner join in the attacking department while the trio of Chilwell, Silva and Malang Sarr join in the defensive side of things. Although, the latter will be sent out on loan next season.

Despite the prospect of a title-challenging side on paper, Craig Burley still believes Lampard must sort an issue in his defence.

Kai Havertz and other names will be good enough to push Chelsea as title-contenders. However, their efforts could be undone by the Blues defence, says Burley.

“Chelsea had one of their worst seasons defensively last year, they lost a heck of a lot of goals,”

“So Lampard knows that, yes, ‘how do I fit in [Callum] Hudson-Odoi and [Christian] Pulisic and [Timo] Werner and Havertz and [Mason] Mount and all these players?” Burley said as quoted by Express Sport.

“But [also] ‘how do I make sure my backline – and dodgy goalkeeper in Kepa – how do I make sure I solidify that? Which was a big problem for us last year”

“Lost a heck of a lot of goals and you can’t negate the defensive aspects of the game because you don’t win titles.”

“You look at Liverpool, what did they do? Super, attacking team, went out and bought Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, went and spent big on two big players.”

“What are Man City doing this year? Going to look to spend big on a centre-half, at least one, and went out and bought Ederson before that.”

“Chelsea are going to be great to watch but I just don’t know which way – going forward or going back the other way.”

Havertz is expected to add depth in midfield for Chelsea and bring a new dimension to the Blues attack.
