Kai Havertz has officially completed his long-awaited transfer to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen after signing a five-year contract.

Talks regarding the transfer of Havertz have been ongoing for at least several weeks as Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen struggled to reach a settlement.

Despite the uncertainty, however, the 21-year-old’s move to London has been long expected. Even Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz recently confessed he expects a departure. Although he didn’t name drop Chelsea or any other club for that matter.

But reports emerged this week claiming that Chelsea and Leverkusen had struck a reported €80m agreement for Havertz on Wednesday, including €20m in add-ons.

The attacking midfielder, who can also play down the flanks and as a center-forward, then left the German team camp on Friday morning for London to complete his big-money move.

“I am very happy and proud to be here,” Havertz told the club’s website after signing a contract until 2025.

“For me, it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!”

“Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea,” added Blues director Marina Granovskaia.

“He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent. We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.”

Havertz becomes Frank Lampard’s seventh new summer signing after Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, and Xavier Mbuyamba.
