FC Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman spoke on Memphis Depay’s debut and the team’s performance in their friendly against Girona.

Memphis Depay’s debut performance left Ronald Koeman satisfied following a 3-1 friendly win over Girona on Saturday.

Depay came off the bench to make his first appearance for Barcelona since his free transfer from Lyon and marked the moment by scoring his first goal for the club in an 86th-minute penalty.

The former Manchester United winger tasted 47 minutes of action overall and did enough to please Koeman.

“I think he played well,” said the Barcelona manager as per Marca.

“He’s a quality player, and he showed that at points. He’s important for us because we need to have competition up top.”

Gerard Pique scored a penalty in the first half to put the Blaugrana in front. Striker Rey Manaj, whom Depay replaced before the break, doubled the club’s lead.

Samuel Saiz pulled one back for Girona with a penalty in the final minutes of the first half before Depay fired home another spot-kick to restore Barcelona’s two-goal advantage.

“We had more rhythm than the other day,” continued Koeman. “Girona are a good team who try to play. It was a good game, considering we’re still in pre-season. There was rhythm on both sides.

“I’m happy to have added more minutes and the players who have joined the most recently have played. It’s all positive.”
