The Dutchman is on international duty at present but his club football future which had long looked uncertain is resolved now.

FC Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Memphis Depay on a free transfer from Olympique Lyon.

Depay had been linked with this move for over a year. He even supposedly came close to joining Barcelona last summer but the transfer broke down due to the Catalan club’s financial troubles.

2020/21 marked the most prolific season for the former Manchester United man, who scored 22 goals and supplied 12 assists across Ligue 1 and Coupe de France.

The 27-year-old has committed to a two-year contract at Camp Nou, becoming Barca’s fourth signing of the summer after Eric Garcia, Sergio Aguero, and Emerson Royal.

An official statement on the club website read: “FC Barcelona and Memphis Depay have reached an agreement for the player to join the Club once his contract with Olympique Lyonnais is at an end.

“The player will sign a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season.

“Born in Holland but with Ghanaian father, he is a versatile forward. He tends to play on the left and can also work as a centre forward, but far from being a target man, he also likes to play a part in the build-up.

“He oozes skill and has a fine shot, and his physical strength makes him hard to deal with in the one-on-one.”
