Jurgen Klopp is unfazed by the spending of Liverpool’s rivals and is against the idea of demanding financial backing from the club’s owners.

Liverpool spent close to €200 million in the summer of 2018 on transfers, bringing in Naby Keita, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri, and Alisson Becker.

They had also invested heavily on squad recruitment in the 2017/18 season, signing the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Their investment bore fruit as they went on to win the Champions League, Club World Cup, and Premier League.

Liverpool, however, have been very quite so far this summer in terms of new signings, having completed just one of Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiacos.

Manager Jurgen Klopp on several occasions has explained that the financial uncertainty caused by the coronavirus outbreak is the reason for him keeping low in the transfer market.

And speaking ahead of the Community Shield clash against Arsenal, Klopp maintained his stance.

“We will never have a relationship where I go to [owner] Mike Gordon and say ‘that’s the money I need and without it we cannot survive’ or whatever,” he said, as per Goal.

“There are other clubs that have different policies, obviously, but that’s what you have to accept and expect.

“As a sensible person, I know that these are not the best times in our lives, so why should we plan long term? But we are in a good place, we have a good team, and we are motivated.”
