Right after England’s win over Croatia, Jose Mourinho gave his verdict and admitted he was pleasantly surprised by the Three Lions.
Contrary to previous years, Jose Mourinho believes this England side has something interesting in his hands. Despite the obvious balanced stats between both sides, there was an evident control of the game from the English side. The midfield battle between Kalvin Phillips and Luka Modric had a clear winner. It is obvious that the Real Madrid star needs Ivan Rakitic to accompany him, but his retirement was final.
Mourinho analyzed the entire match and offered his insight of specific player performances he absolutely loved from the Three Lions. In fact, he confirmed his trust in Gareth Southgate is absolute to complete great things with this group of players. In case you didn’t know, England won the first match of a major international tournament for the first time in modern history. They always lost or got a draw in their tournament opener.
Mourinho’s analysis in full.
As per talkSPORT, this is what Mourinho said about England’s performance: “Everything was under control and that means a lot, especially for the first game, where people have a tendency to look to the previous results in Euros and World Cups. I think it was very positive. Look at that squad and look at the work they have done for many years. [Jude] Bellingham, [Kalvin] Phillips have arrived recently but the others have years of national team [experience].
“They feel comfortable, they have more than a team, they have a group. They know what they are doing and you could even feel after 1-0 the way England played they were not emotional, they were not driven by let’s do a show here at Wembley. They were pragmatic, they were objective, keeping complete control of the situation. I was positive before the competition started and after this victory, I am even more confident about the team.”
