Lackluster going forward and sloppy at the back, the Red Devils dropped two points as a price for their shortcomings on Sunday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is satisfied with Manchester United gaining “a point from a losing position” against Southampton but admits “it’s not what we wanted.”
An unfortunate turn of events saw Manchester United go behind at the half-hour-mark at St. Mary’s, with Fred deflecting the ball into his own net.
The equalizer came twenty minutes later when Mason Greenwood slotted home from close range to make it two goals in two games in the new Premier League campaign.
It appeared as if the Red Devils would go on to win the game, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, and Greenwood all coming close to scoring, but they simply lacked the intent they had displayed in the 5-1 thrashing of Leeds United last week and were held to a 1-1 draw.
“Overall, I think we created enough chances to win it and played some decent football at times; then again we could have lost it but for a very good save from David [De Gea],” Solskjaer said in his post-match press conference.
“It’s a point from a losing position but it’s not what we wanted.
“We weathered the storm in the first two or three minutes after some set-plays, then we played some good football ourselves, created chances from set-plays and when they scored that was more or less out of nowhere.
“It’s a point from a losing position, but still we want two more in every single game but now it’s about working on fitness, a couple of other issues we need to sort and then we should be ready for Wolverhampton.”
