Defending champions Portugal or ‘favorites’ France could be the Three Lions’ opponents in the next stage of the tournament.

England are ready to face the heavyweights of Euro 2020 in the last 16 of the tournament, says Gareth Southgate.

A narrow 1-0 win against the Czech Republic on Tuesday was enough for England not only to qualify for the knockout round but also to seal the top spot in Group D.

England will be taking on the runners-up of Group F next Tuesday. As things currently stand, Group F has France on the top with four points, Germany in second place with three, Portugal in third with as many, and Hungary at the bottom with one.

“We’ve played two opponents in the Croats and the Czechs who I think are playing at a very good level,” Southgate said, as Sky Sports reports.

“And Scotland, which as an occasion and an experience for our players, especially the younger ones, was a quite unique and really important one, so these will be different games.

“We know world champions, European champions and Germany, who to me look like they’re back on song. They’ve brought some very experienced players back in.

“So whoever we play, really, really tough opposition but we’ve sort of known that for 18 months. We’ve known the route through.”
