Chelsea are weighing out their move for Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana as they prepare for potential exits at the end of the season.
Chelsea are showing a growing interest in Leicester City defender Wesley Fofana as they weigh over their transfer options for Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
During a pre-season friendly against Villareal, the 20-year-old suffered from a broken fibula and ankle ligament. Hence, the centre-back is currently undergoing recovery. Regardless of his situation, the France Under-21 star has received a high rating from the scouts at Stamford Bridge.
Will they sign him in January?
For obvious reasons, Chelsea will potentially not sign Fofana in the forthcoming transfer window. Instead, they might just power through a big-money move in the summer of next year. This will give them enough time to see how the Foxes defender recovers from his issue.
But, Leicester will not settle for anything lower than their expectations, with Fofana’s contract not due until June 2025.
The London club actually have another alternative in the name of Jules Kounde. In fact, they saw their offer rejected by Sevilla during the summer of this year. The Frenchman wished to make a move to the European champions, but both teams could not agree on a deal.
Another player that has been offered to the Blues is Matthijs de Ligt of Juventus. The Serie A club are looking to offload him in the summer of next year to remove his salary from their bill.
Why is Chelsea focused on buying defenders?
The main objective is to fill out the possible exit of Rudiger and Christensen who have not yet agreed with the renewal terms. The German international has been linked to Real Madrid, whereas Chelsea have had problems in negotiations with the Danish defender.
That’s just not it. Along with these two, Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva will also see their contracts expire in June 2022. Although, discussing their future in the Premier League is much easier than Rudiger and Christensen.
That brings us back to Wesley Fofana, who might be a cheaper and convenient alternative for the defensive trouble that Chelsea is going through at the moment. Though, the Blues will need to exercise patience in order to steal him from Leicester.
