Under new leadership, Burnley took on Manchester United at Turf Moor this Tuesday night. We have the player ratings.
Tonight marked Burnley’s first Premier League clash since the arrival of their new American owners. However, the Clarets didn’t have the best start to the game. Westwood became the latest player to forget the regular protest against racism in the beginning and shot the ball to his defender as all players took a knee.
The first half included more controversial moments than actual goal scoring opportunities. The match referee had to check VAR after a dangerous tackle on Cavani by Burnley’s Brady. However, the referee decided that Luke Shaw had committed a foul himself at the start of the play. Therefore, Brady’s yellow card was overturned and United’s left-back received one himself. In fact, Shaw’s dangerous challenge could have also sent out the player.
Shortly after, Maguire managed to put a stunning header into the net. However, the goal was disallowed as the defender had bumped Peters in the back. The first 45 minutes included a lot of bad tackles and the game was interrupted several times. The most dangerous chance came from Martial as he delivered a wonderful shot stopped in style by Nick Pope.
On the second half, the Red Devils absolutely dominated the game but failed to create much danger to Pope’s goal. Pogba, Matic and Bruno Fernandes dominated the midfield area and Rashford’s attacking plays gave Pieters quite the rough night.
United fans had to wait till the 71st minute to celebrate the goal that gave him the Premier League leadership. Rashford found Pogba in the middle, who scored a fantastic goal on the volley. Although the ball suffered a deflection that fooled Pope, the goal was still wonderful to look at. Pogba is working quite hard to disprove his haters.
Manchester United now hold first place in England’s top tier, three points ahead of current champions Liverpool.
