Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has been officially announced as a Schalke 04 player after signing on a free transfer deal.
Almost four years after his departure from Germany, ‘The Hunter’ is back in the Bundesliga. The 37-year-old striker was announced as Schalke’s new player as they attempt to avoid a shock relegation this season.
Schalke currently occupies the last place in the German league as the Royal Blues have only managed to win one match out of their last 32 fixtures. After their recent win against Hoffenheim, the Gelsenkirchen-based club had their hopes restored for 2021.
Now, Schalke fans can get excited as one of their former star players returns to the club. Huntelaar has signed a deal with the German side until the end of the season, although further contract details haven’t been disclosed.
“We need to win games and score goals to climb up the table,” said Huntelaar. “I want to play my part in the club staying up. Schalke belongs in the Bundesliga and it’s our responsibility to make sure that we stay here.”
Despite being 37-years-old, ‘The Hunter’ had already scored on seven occasions for Ajax this season. In fact, the Dutch striker recently scored a brace against FC Twente at the Eredivise. With it, Huntelaar kept the current champions at the top of the league. Moreover, he did it as soon as he entered the pitch, and in just two minutes.
However, Klaas-Jan was not a first choice at Ajax, especially after the Amsterdam club completed a €22.5 million move for Sebastien Haller. Huntelaar now returns to a club where he left quite a legacy, with 126 goals and 35 assists on 240 appearances for Schalke.
