FC Barcelona have reportedly stepped up their efforts to lower their salary cap by making a request to four senior players.

Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Sergi Roberto are the four players who could next take pay cuts at Camp Nou.

Barcelona’s €1.2 billion debt, along with the lost revenue during the pandemic, has left them in a vulnerable position. Add La Liga’s salary cap to the mix, the club chiefs have got their work cut out. In fact, they can’t register a single summer signing, or even Lionel Messi, until the wage bill is lowered.

According to Sport, the Barcelona board has now met with the representatives of the four above-mentioned players to discuss a reduced salary.

Sporting director Mateo Alemany has held talks with the agent of Busquets and Roberto, Maria Orobitg, along with Pique and Alba’s representative, Vicente Flores.

The four players were on board with the idea, but they have allegedly turned down a 40% cut proposal.
