A goal midway into the second half helped Wales avoid losing all three points on their opening day of the European Championships.

Gareth Bale has hailed Wales for showing “class to fight back” in their Euro 2020 curtain-raiser against Switzerland on Saturday.

Kieffer Moore knocked one in past Yann Sommer to level the scoreline after Breel Embolo had put the Swiss in front at the start of the second half.

Mario Gavranovic’s effort was disallowed by VAR just as Switzerland thought they had sealed the win late in the game, and the two teams ended up sharing points at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

“Both teams tried to play, it was a little bit tense, but it’s not a bad result and we take the positives,” Bale said after the 1-1 stalemate, as per Goal.

“We wanted to win the game, we had chances but so did they.

“When you go 1-0 down and you can crumble but we showed a lot of grit and character like always and we showed our class to fight back and get the goal. We worked very hard, it’s hard in this heat, I’m proud of the boys.

“After the match we said we need to use this as a springboard. We now need to recover and move onto the next game.”
