Monaco and Marseille faced each other at Stade Louis II this Saturday night for Ligue 1. We have the player ratings.
The two biggest clubs of the South of France went head-to-head this Saturday night at Stade Louis II. Marseille were looking to overturn their negative spell in the French league. Andre Villas Boas’s side failed to win their last three matches before the Mediterranean derby.
Marseille started the game in the best way possible, as Caleta-Car’s incredible long pass made its way to Radonjic’s feet. The Serbian winger ran across the pitch and put his team in the lead with an ice-cool finish.
However, the second half went very differently to Villas-Boas’s squad. Monaco turned on the turbo and dominated the last 45 minutes, leaving Marseille with no chance of securing any points. Niko Kovac’s decision to sub in Golovin was quickly proven right, as the midfielder immediately assisted Maripan with a nearly perfect corner.
Moreover, Golovin proved he’s more than a one-hit-wonder as he made a copycat assist from the other side of the pitch less than 30 minutes later. This time, Tchouameni was the one on the receiving end of the corner. In fact, the player had no trouble with his header after being left unmarked.
However, there was one player that made an effort to show Golovin he wasn’t the only golden substitute. After only 14 minutes on the pitch, Stevan Jovetic put the game to an end with a stunning free kick that left Mandanda wishing he had stayed home.
Monaco are now only one point behind Lyon, who currently occupy Ligue 1’s third place. Moreover, Niko Kovac’s side are only six points behind current leaders Paris Saint-Germain. On the other hand, Marseille’s recent performances will have Andre Villas-Boas struggling to fight for his place as the team’s manager.
