The Real Madrid midfielder named his pick for the GOAT title after Croatia’s World Cup exit.
Luka Modric has said Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time and that he hopes the Argentina captain wins the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 37-year-old’s declaration came after a Messi-inspired Argentina defeated Croatia 3-0 in the semi-finals to seal a spot in this Sunday’s final against either France or Morocco in Lusail.
Messi gave a man-of-the-match performance in the game, turning back the clock with a ridiculous dribble to set up Julian Alvarez for Argentina’s third goal, while also scoring a penalty to put his country in front.
“Hopefully [Messi] wins this World Cup, he is the best player in history and he deserves it,” Modric told Argentinian outlet Olé.
“He is having a great World Cup, he is showing his quality and greatness in every game.”
Modric said he would vote for Ronaldo in 2018
The midfielder’s comments came just four years after he said he would pick then-Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo in the GOAT debate.
As quoted by Marca during an interview with SVT Sport in 2018, Modric said: “Both Ronaldo and Messi are great players.
“It depends on [people’s] taste, who likes the one and who the other player. I don’t like comparing them, but for us, as Real Madrid players, Cristiano is the best.”
France and Morocco, who eliminated Ronaldo and Portugal in the quarter-finals, will play the second World Cup semi-final on Wednesday. For betting tips and stats, visit the link on Ace Football here.
