The 2001 Ballon d’Or winner has chosen his dream XI of the competition’s greatest players in history.
Michael Owen has paired Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi upfront together in his all-time Champions League XI.
During a chat with ex-Manchester United and England teammate Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport, Owen selected his dream XI using what appeared to be a makeshift 4-3-1-2 formation.
The former striker picked Ronaldo and Messi, the two highest goalscorers in the history of the competition to head the attack. Real Madrid icon Zinedine Zidane sits just behind the pair.
Now-Barcelona manager Xavi and Barca captain Andres Iniesta join Owen’s former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard in midfield.
Brazilian World Cup winners Cafu and Roberto Carlos start in the right and left-back positions respectively. AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini joins ex-Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos in central defense, while Juventus icon Gianluigi Buffon is in goal.
Other Champions League stars such as Thierry Henry, Robert Lewandowski, Paul Scholes, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, Ronaldinho, and Ferdinand failed to make the cut.
