During an award ceremony, Steven Gerrard revealed the end of his long-lasting rivalry with Sir Alex Ferguson and their friendship.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s rivalry with Steven Gerrard was so great that the two legends don’t actually have pictures together. During the days in which the Scotsman coached Manchester United, the Liverpool frontman was always playing against his teams. Due to the historic rivalry between both clubs, these two developed a nasty rivalry that reached a boiling point. There was a time when they couldn’t stand each other from a professional standpoint. But secretly, Stevie always admired Sir Alex due to his many achievements.

We also dare say that the Scotsman definitely wanted Gerrard in his squad but he never tried to persuade him due to the nature of their rivalry. Man United and Liverpool are long-life enemies and both knew that they needed to uphold that tradition. Now that Sir Alex is retired as a manager, Stevie is starting to take the first steps towards the job. He is not doing terribly at Rangers with a massive level of success in Scotland. Gerrard recently received the Manager of the Year Award in the country and he let us in on a little secret about Sir Alex Ferguson.

Both men admire each other.

After Sir Alex revealed he admires what Gerrard is doing at Rangers, Stevie said the following through Goal: “I’ll let you into a little secret: I’ve had a couple of conversations with him. Since I retired we have parked our rivalry up and he gave me time on the phone to bounce a few things off him, a few questions to do with the management up here at Rangers. He was fantastic in those conversations. At some point moving forward I’d love the chance to sit down with him and have a coffee. He’s agreed to that and that’s fantastic from his point of view because he doesn’t have to give me his time, especially being a rival, but I think that goes to show what type of man he is.

“He’s not just the iconic manager we all know. What he said about me is very high praise and I’m extremely flattered. He’s an iconic figure in the game. Through no fault of our own we became big, big rivals at Liverpool and Manchester United, the two biggest clubs in British football. We were massive rivals for many years and he’s someone that even though he was a rival I looked up to him immensely because he is such an iconic figure in the game. What he achieved in the game is up there with the very best who have ever lived. So I’m really flattered and humbled by his words.”
