In what could be one of Josep Bartomeu’s final acts as president, Barcelona have tied down four stars to new contracts.
The clock is ticking on Josep Bartomeu’s reign following a vote of no confidence against him. The motion has gathered the required number of signatures needed to overthrow the Barcelona president and his board.
Rather than face the chop, however, Bartomeu is reportedly considering resigning by next week. The Catalan is under tremendous pressure for many reasons. The Lionel Messi transfer saga is just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s business as usual until then, though, with Barcelona announcing new deals for these four players in what could be one of Bartomeu’s final acts as president.
Gerard Pique
The former Manchester United center-back has penned an extension until June 2024. His new deal will be subject to him playing a certain number of matches in 2021/22 and includes a buyout clause of €500m.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen
Ter Stegen has proven to be one of Europe’s best goalkeepers in recent seasons at Barcelona. Talks over a new contract have been ongoing for most of the year, but have now finally concluded in a three-year extension until 2025.
The German, who arrived at Camp Nou in 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach, has a release clause of €500m inserted into his new deal.
Frenkie de Jong
The former Ajax playmaker has struggled to live up to expectations since his €86m arrival in 2019. In 47 appearances, he has recorded just two goals and five assists. But time is still on the 23-year-old’s side and Barcelona have acted swiftly.
The 26-time LaLiga champions have tied De Jong down to a new contract until 2026 and slapped a €400m buyout clause on him.
Things may improve for the highly-rated youngster this season under his old Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman, who has started him in all five of his games in charge so far.
Clement Lenglet
Lenglet has proven a valuable addition to the Blaugrana squad since arriving from Sevilla in 2018 for €35.90m.
The 25-year-old has developed a partnership with Pique in central defense and made 89 appearances in all competitions. Therefore, Barcelona have extended his contract until 2026. It also includes a release clause of €300m.
