Josep Maria Bartomeu’s reign is under serious threat as a motion against the Barcelona president reached it’s required number of votes for a presidential referendum.

Jordi Farre’s thundering message of ‘objective accomplished’ on social media on Wednesday has set in motion a series of events that could change the course of Barcelona’s trajectory sooner than perhaps expected.

A movement, called ‘Mes que una Mocio’ (‘More than a Motion’), was formed to overthrow Bartomeu and his board recently. Supported by members such as Farre and Victor Font, it has achieved the aim of at least 16,521 signatures.

According to Diario Sport, the movement has acquired 20,687 in total to proceed with the case. Barcelona, in turn, must state a referendum date on Bartomeu’s future within the next 20 days.

Barcelona’s statutes state the upcoming referendum must be held within three months. There are already rumors that it could be in late October. That would be around the time of the club’s LaLiga showdown with Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

Bartomeu becomes only the third president to face a vote of no confidence in the club’s entire history after Josep Lluis Nunez (1998 – 5,664 votes) and Joan Laporta (2008 – 9,145 votes).

In the case of the previous above mentioned presidents, the vote failed to pass. Although Bartomeu’s 20,687 votes far outstrip them, fueling hope among the ‘Cules’ that there will be a different ending.

More updates are expected on Bartomeu’s future ahead of a board meeting on October 13.
