Steve McManaman believes Gareth Bale should push for an exit from Real Madrid this summer to reignite his fading career prospects.

Bale is surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, having plummeted down the pecking order. Zinedine Zidane no longer rates him and admitted last year ‘it would be best for everyone’ if he left.

Although the former world record signing recently confirmed that Real Madrid pulled the plug on a move to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning last summer, and admitted his future is in the club’s hands.

Staying for another season in the Spanish capital will do more harm than good, though. Bale made just 20 appearances in all competitions last term, and featured just twice after Real Madrid returned from the coronavirus-enforced break.

Now McManaman has recommended the Welshman consider a Premier League return as his next stop amid talk of a Tottenham comeback.

“I think Gareth Bale could play in the Premier League and get back to his highest level. I certainly hope so,” said the former Real Madrid midfielder on ‘Football Talks’ with FIFA Legends.

“I know he’s 31 years of age. He’s had a number of injures but I don’t think he’s played a lot of football in recent years so he should be fit and strong.

“The most important thing for Gareth is to play football and if he’s not going to do that at Real Madrid then I think he should try somewhere else.”
