Bayern Munich chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has handed an unexpected transfer boost to Arsenal over Thiago Alcantara by denying having talks with Liverpool.
Liverpool are said to be the front-runners for Thiago’s signature ever since the Spaniard refused to commit to fresh terms at Bayern Munich.
Having already entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Allianz Arena, the 29-year-old midfielder’s future has become one of the hottest topics this summer.
Some recent reports have indicated that Arsenal are ready to go head to head with the Reds for Thiago.
Others have gone even further to suggest Mikel Arteta has already held talks with the former Barcelona star over a potential move to the Emirates.
The Gunners are reportedly looking to benefit from Liverpool’s reluctance to fork out £25million for a player with less than a year left on his contract.
Although they’ve been trying to snap up Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey for months now, the Ghanaian’s £45million continues to be a sticking point.
Thiago represents a much cheaper alternative and can add a new dimension to Arteta’s depleted midfield line.
Despite many may have seen this move impossible, Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has just thrown a lifeline to Arsenal.
Rummenigge has confirmed Liverpool’s hesitation to make a formal bid for the illustrious playmaker.
“We always read a lot about Liverpool, but they haven’t contacted us yet,” he said, as relayed by the Express Sport.
“Yesterday, we had the appointment with our employees, and his whole family was there, and they wandered around the square in great nostalgia (at the Allianz Arena), I would almost say.
“That looked a lot like goodbye, as if he had made up his mind.”
Thiago helped Bayern climb atop of the Champions League last weekend only to communicate a sudden change of heart to the Bavarians boss Hansi Flick immediately after.
He is understood to have changed his mind over his long-term future in Bavaria following a stunning European success but still appears to be heading towards the summer exit.
