Will the Dutchman’s departure convince Barca to sign a January replacement?

Xavi Hernandez has insisted Barcelona must sign a new striker as Memphis Depay leaves Camp Nou to join Atletico Madrid.

On Friday, Barca confirmed they sold Depay to their La Liga rivals for €3m. Having fallen out of favour under Xavi, Depay joins the Rojiblancos in pursuit of more game time.

Depay made only three appearances under Xavi this season. But the Spanish coach believes his departure should convince Barca to add a new forward to their ranks.

“I don’t know if there are signings that will come to the team,” Xavi told reporters. “But with the departure of Memphis Depay, I think it is necessary to sign a striker.

“We’ll see if that’s possible though I think things will be fine.”

Xavi’s comments echoed his comments over Barca’s squad depth before Depay’s move.

In an interview earlier this month, Xavi said: “I don’t want anyone to leave. I’m delighted with the squad. It seems that there will be no market for us.”

Barcelona have reportedly included a preferential option to sign Yannick Carrasco for €20m in Depay’s contract. However, that clause won’t be activated until the next summer.

Let’s see if Xavi’s call for a new signing will convince Barca’s hierarchy to make their first winter signing in the coming days.
