Sergi Roberto has already convinced the newly appointed manager to give him a new deal at Barcelona.
Barcelona have been busy extending the contracts of their young stars in recent months. Ansu Fati and Pedri have signed new deals, while Ousmane Dembele is on the verge of extending his stay. However, the Catalans might now consider giving a new contract to one of their experienced defenders.
According to Sport, Xavi Hernandez has asked the Barcelona board to extend the contract of Sergi Roberto.
Roberto is a cornerstone of the Barcelona squad under Xavi. The newly-appointed boss uses the Spaniard both as a midfielder and a right-back. The team is far from top form, but Roberto is among the players who have shown significant improvement.
The homegrown talent has made 316 senior appearances for Barcelona, scoring 12 goals and providing 37 assists. He is currently out of action due to a muscle injury.
On Monday, the club confirmed he would remain sidelined until further notice.
“First-team player Sergi Roberto continues to experience discomfort in his right thigh quadriceps muscle. He remains on the injury list until further notice,” reads the official Barcelona statement.
Barcelona were held to a disappointing draw in the absence of Roberto on Tuesday. The Catalans will challenge Bayern Munich for a victory in their next Champions League game on December 8.
But before that, they must play two La Liga battles against Villarreal and Real Betis on November 27 and December 4, respectively.
