The Mexican striker’s horror collision with David Luiz left him unconscious on the football pitch. Jimenez was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery after fracturing his skull.

Wolves’ win against Arsenal last Sunday was smirched after news that Raul Jimenez had undergone surgery after a skull fracture. The 29-year-old striker was stretched off with an oxygen mask after a head-on collision heard throughout the stadium.

The nature of the injury is serious, so the club has asked for the player’s privacy to be respected. Wolves released a short statement detailing some aspects of the Mexican’s recovery.

“Any injury of this nature is complex and timescales are uncertain but it’s safe to say that Raul’s most immediate needs are simple: space, rest, and peace,” he told the club’s website.

Raul Jimenez established himself as one of Wolves’ star players. However, it is unlikely Jimenez will be able to help Wolverhampton’s Premier League efforts this season. Moreover, the nature of the injury has sparked doubts about whether the striker will be able to continue his career.

In 2017, Ryan Mason suffered a similar injury which forced him to early retirement. Therefore, the former Hull City player called on football authorities to change the protocols. Mason was shocked that David Luiz continued on the pitch after the collision.

“It’s a real shame my incident didn’t change the perception; what is it really going to take for people to start realizing this is something really, really serious?” he told talkSPORT.

“Sometimes you have to forget the protocol and have a bit of common sense,” he added. “This current protocol we have in place isn’t okay and it’s dangerous.”
