The Italy international faces a 10-month ban from football, but Newcastle United are hopeful he’ll still be available to play this weekend.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remains optimistic about Sandro Tonali’s availability for the upcoming match against Wolves on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) imposed a 10-month ban on Tonali. This was for the player breaching betting rules. He also faces a €20,000 fine and must undergo eight months of rehabilitation. The punishment is pending approval by UEFA and FIFA.

“We’ve heard the news, the statement, but we haven’t had anything from the Italian authorities at the moment,” Howe said at a press conference on Friday.

“I think there’s a high chance again that he could be available for us. I still think there are a few things that have to happen before the ban is imposed, so let’s see.”

Newcastle will hope that is the case ahead of a big week of fixtures. They’ll first visit Wolves on Saturday in the Premier League. Manchester United then awaits in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, before Arsenal swing over to St James’ Park next weekend in the league.

Despite the circumstances, Tonali maintains a positive mindset. Howe has commended the midfielder’s training performances and continues to support him.

Tonali joined Newcastle in the summer from AC Milan for a reported €64 million fee. He has made 12 appearances for the Magpies and scored one goal.
