Former Premier League star Shaun Wright-Phillips has explained why Arsenal have signed a better defender than Manchester United this summer.
Ben White’s Premier League experience and lower expectations make him a better signing than Raphael Varane, says Shaun Wright-Phillips.
The two defenders have left their respective clubs for big-money moves in the Premier League. White has joined Arsenal from Brighton in a €58.8 million (£50m) deal, while Varane is on course to swap Real Madrid for Manchester United for around €50m (£42.7m).
Out of the two of them, White is the only one to boast Premier League experience after making 36 appearances for Brighton last season. That said, Varane has a proven record at the highest level. The Frenchman has four Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns, and even a World Cup to his name.
But Wright-Phillips feels White can prove Arsenal have done the better transfer business this summer.
“It’s a big statement but Varane is coming into a brand new league with pressure.”
“I’d definitely say Ben White.” ✅

“One thing I thought Arsenal missed was a defender like him,” the former Manchester City and Chelsea winger told talkSPORT about Ben White.
“He’s got old an old-school mentality but he can play football as well.”
Asked if White can do better than Varane, Wright-Phillips replied: “Yes I personally do. I know it’s a big statement, but he is used to the Premier League and he is used to defending a lot for Brighton, week in, week out.
“Varane has come into a whole new league and he is going to put under immense pressure.”
As for who he would sign between the two defenders, Wright-Phillips said: “At this moment, I would definitely say Ben White.”
