Former Premier League star Paul Merson has explained why CR7 is perfectly suited for the Blues’ style of play.
Cristiano Ronaldo ticks all the boxes Chelsea are lacking in the attack, according to Paul Merson.
The former Arsenal midfielder believes Chelsea paid the price for not signing Ronaldo on Sunday when they failed to finish Tottenham off and allowed their London rivals to snatch a late equalizer in a 2-2 derby draw.
The Blues only got three shots on target from 16 attempts, something Merson feels wouldn’t have happened had Ronaldo been around. The wantaway Manchester United star, however, remains at Old Trafford instead.
“Chelsea were outstanding against Tottenham on Sunday, Merson told Sky Sports.
“They dominated the match from start to finish, but they haven’t got a goalscorer or center-forward and that cost them three points. Despite their domination, Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made just one save. That tells you all you need to know.
“I cannot believe they didn’t or haven’t gone in for Cristiano Ronaldo. He just ticks all the boxes Chelsea are lacking.
“Playing for Chelsea is not like playing for Manchester United, who are working from the halfway line. Chelsea are on the edge of the box, dominating games.
“Chelsea have unbelievable wing-backs, they dominate football matches, if they were putting the ball into the box for Ronaldo I would dread to think how many goals he could score.”
Thomas Tuchel’s side will next face Leeds United at Elland Road this Saturday in the Premier League.
